section 02 / rubric matrix

The four formats you might face

Not all AI interviews work the same way. Identify the format from your invite and your prep changes accordingly.

Full taxonomy →
TXT

Text chat

You type answers to behavioural questions in a chat interface. No video, no audio scoring.

seen on: Sapia.ai, Mya, Paradox/Olivia

VID

One-way recorded video

You record answers to pre-recorded prompts. No one is on the other end during recording.

seen on: HireVue, Willo, myInterview, VidCruiter, Spark Hire

AVT

Live AI avatar

Video-call-style experience where an avatar asks questions and reacts in real time. Emerging in 2026, still uncommon.

seen on: Tavus-backed tools, experimental HireVue features

HYB

Assessment hybrid

The interview is one module among several: SJT tests, personality assessments, technical assessments, and video.

seen on: Harver, CodeSignal+video, Pymetrics+HireVue

annotation / myth correction// half the prep articles on Google are out of date

HireVue removed facial expression scoring in 2021.

If an article tells you to “smile more” or “maintain eye contact” because the AI is watching your face, that article is out of date. In 2026, HireVue scores your language content and speech structure using Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales. Half the prep content on Google is based on behaviour that was removed three years ago.

section 05 / candidate rights / 5 jurisdictions

// summary, not legal advice

You have rights as a candidate

  • NYC

    Local Law 144 (AEDT)

10 business days notice. Right to see the bias audit summary. Right to request an alternative selection process or accommodation.

  • IL

    Illinois AIVIA

Consent required before AI analysis is run on your video interview responses. Right to request video deletion.

  • EU

EU AI Act (high-risk hiring, from 2 August 2026)

Hiring AI classified as high-risk. Right to a meaningful explanation of automated decisions, plus human oversight.

  • US/UK

    ADA / Equality Act 2010

Reasonable accommodation regardless of platform. You do not need to name a diagnosis: describe the functional need.

section 06 / neurodiversity / research-supported

If you are autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or otherwise neurodivergent

AI interviews may disadvantage you in measurable ways. Research published in 2025 (Benson et al., Wiley International Journal of Selection and Assessment) shows that autistic candidates’ response patterns diverge measurably from neurotypical patterns on algorithmically scored video interviews, affecting outcomes. You have legal rights to accommodations. Here is how to push back.

Top questions answered

What is an AI interviewer?+
Software that conducts some or all of a job interview without a human present. Four main types in 2026: text chat (Sapia, Mya), one-way recorded video (HireVue, Willo), live AI avatar (emerging, uncommon), and assessment-hybrids (Harver). Most candidates face text chat or one-way video.
Does HireVue score facial expressions in 2026?+
No. HireVue removed facial expression analysis in 2021 following the ORCAA audit. It scores language content and speech structure via BARS rubrics. Prep articles telling you to smile more at the camera are based on outdated information.
Can I use ChatGPT in my AI interview?+
Using AI to prepare (generate practice questions, refine your story bank) is legitimate. Using AI to generate your submitted answer is a different matter: Sapia explicitly detects AI-generated content. On HireVue, BARS rubrics reward specificity that ChatGPT tends not to produce. The practical advice: prepare with AI, answer authentically.
How should I structure my answers?+
Use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Keep the Situation brief (10-15 seconds), spend most time on Action (45-70 seconds of specific decisions and trade-offs), end with a quantified Result. Aim for 90-120 seconds total on video platforms. Specificity is what BARS rubrics reward.
Can I request accommodations if I am neurodivergent?+
Yes. ADA (US) and Equality Act 2010 (UK) require reasonable adjustments regardless of AI use. You can request questions in writing, extended response time, a text-based interview instead of video, or rescheduling. You do not need to name a specific diagnosis: describe your functional need. See the full neurodiversity guide with accommodation templates.
