AI-Powered Interviews:
the candidate’s field guide (April 2026)
You have an invite email. An AI is going to interview you. This is the guide written for your side of the table.
Calm, platform-literate, rights-aware. No fear-mongering, no affiliate listicle, no vendor talking-points. We tell you what each system actually scores in 2026 and what your legal recourse looks like.

section 01 / the candidate pipeline

Where the AI lives in your application
Most candidates encounter AI between “applied” and “interviewed by a human”. Here is the modern pipeline and what runs at each stage.
Applied
ATS keyword filter
Screened
Olivia, Mya, scheduling bots
AI interview
HireVue, Sapia, Willo, Spark Hire
Human reviewed
Recruiter or hiring manager
Offered
Reference check, Workday, etc.
section 02 / rubric matrix
The four formats you might face
Not all AI interviews work the same way. Identify the format from your invite and your prep changes accordingly.
Full taxonomy →Text chat
You type answers to behavioural questions in a chat interface. No video, no audio scoring.
seen on: Sapia.ai, Mya, Paradox/Olivia
One-way recorded video
You record answers to pre-recorded prompts. No one is on the other end during recording.
seen on: HireVue, Willo, myInterview, VidCruiter, Spark Hire
Live AI avatar
Video-call-style experience where an avatar asks questions and reacts in real time. Emerging in 2026, still uncommon.
seen on: Tavus-backed tools, experimental HireVue features
Assessment hybrid
The interview is one module among several: SJT tests, personality assessments, technical assessments, and video.
seen on: Harver, CodeSignal+video, Pymetrics+HireVue
HireVue removed facial expression scoring in 2021.
If an article tells you to “smile more” or “maintain eye contact” because the AI is watching your face, that article is out of date. In 2026, HireVue scores your language content and speech structure using Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales. Half the prep content on Google is based on behaviour that was removed three years ago.
What HireVue actually scores in 2026section 03 / 11 platforms / candidate encounter likelihood
full profiles →Platforms you might face
Profiled at equal depth, ranked by how likely you are to encounter them. Each card has the one thing you most need to know before you start.
HireVue
→ONE-WAY VIDEO
Removed facial-expression scoring in 2021. Scores language content and BARS rubric match.
Sapia.ai
→TEXT CHAT
No video or audio. NLP on written text. Detects AI-generated content. 5-7 questions, untimed.
Modern Hire / Harver
→VIDEO + SJT
Multi-modal: your video score is one of several. Do not neglect the situational-judgement tests.
Paradox / Olivia
→SCREENING BOT
Now part of Workday (Oct 2025). Used for screening and routing, not deep interview. Olivia leads to human stages.
myInterview
→ONE-WAY VIDEO
Warmer aesthetic than HireVue. Personality-insight layer is lightweight: focus on content.
Willo
→ONE-WAY VIDEO
Short format (10-15 min total). Answer efficiency matters more than depth on this platform.
VidCruiter
→FULL PLATFORM
Workflows vary hugely employer-to-employer. Follow your invite closely rather than a generic playbook.
Talview
→PROCTORED
Remote invigilation. Take the pre-interview room scan and ID check seriously: they are real.
Mya (StepStone)
→SCREENING BOT
European-market volume hiring. A filter before the real interview, not the interview itself.
Spark Hire
→ONE-WAY VIDEO
Straightforward recorded video used by mid-size employers. Strong content and clarity carry the day.
Metaview
→INTELLIGENCE LAYER
Records and summarises live human interviews. If you see Metaview in your invite, a real human is interviewing you.
section 04 / preparation rubric
A 5-step prep plan
In order. Each step links to a deep page.
Know your platform
Identify what you are facing from the invite email.
Know what it scores
Stop preparing for behaviour that was removed in 2021.
Set up your tech
Camera at eye level, external mic, soft front lighting.
Practise STAR structure
90 to 120 second answers, specific decisions, quantified outcomes.
Know your rights
AEDT, AIVIA, EU AI Act, ADA, Equality Act 2010.
section 05 / candidate rights / 5 jurisdictions
// summary, not legal adviceYou have rights as a candidate
- NYC
Local Law 144 (AEDT)
10 business days notice. Right to see the bias audit summary. Right to request an alternative selection process or accommodation.
- IL
Illinois AIVIA
Consent required before AI analysis is run on your video interview responses. Right to request video deletion.
- EU
EU AI Act (high-risk hiring, from 2 August 2026)
Hiring AI classified as high-risk. Right to a meaningful explanation of automated decisions, plus human oversight.
- US/UK
ADA / Equality Act 2010
Reasonable accommodation regardless of platform. You do not need to name a diagnosis: describe the functional need.
section 06 / neurodiversity / research-supported
If you are autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or otherwise neurodivergent
AI interviews may disadvantage you in measurable ways. Research published in 2025 (Benson et al., Wiley International Journal of Selection and Assessment) shows that autistic candidates’ response patterns diverge measurably from neurotypical patterns on algorithmically scored video interviews, affecting outcomes. You have legal rights to accommodations. Here is how to push back.
